North Star Fitness offers its clients a fun, low impact way to return to regular physical activity - the water!
After physiotherapy for an injury, you may have fear about going back to the gym. Working in the water is a great segway back to land-based exercise - you are fully supported and the waters' buoyancy can completely unload your joints. Cardiovascular work can be completed without bouncing or impact and range of motion can increase as water opens up the injured joint. Take advantage of water's buoyancy, resistance and massage affect on the muscles!
How can water exercise benefit you?
- Water exercise is low to non-weight bearing so painful movements can be made pleasurable.
- Water exercise provides security. The fear of falling and injuring oneself is lessened.
- Water exercise provides freedom of movement and acts as your own three dimensional gym.
- Water decreases swelling and offsets tendency of blood pooling in the arms and legs.
- Water acts as a massage so you can work at high intensity without the muscle soreness.
- Water acts to compress an injured joint. Since pressure increases with depth, swelling can be reduced as a joint is submerged.
- Water exercise improves core strength. Learning about your core muscles and how to fire and engage them is the key to a great water workout. The stronger our core, the more stable you will be in the water.
- Common injuries that can be strengthened in the water include: hip and knee replacement, frozen shoulder, shoulder bursitis, strains and sprains.
